Symptoms of an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
Most of the time abdominal aortic aneurysms don’t present symptoms. In fact, an estimated three out of four people who have them don’t feel anything; the good news is that the aneurysm can be detected during a physical. Doctors can feel the mass, which pulsates. Abdominal aortic aneurysms may be detected during tests for other conditions: an aneurysm will show up on X-rays, CT scans and MRIs.
The most common symptom is pain. The pain may vary in intensity, and it may occur in the chest, abdomen, groin or lower back. If you have unexplained pain in these areas, it’s best to seek immediate medical attention, as the pain may be signaling that the aneurysm is about to rupture. If a rupture is occurring, pain will be severe and most likely experienced in the abdomen or back. It’s important to get immediate medical attention, as this condition is life-threatening.
