Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Tests

If you are at risk for or experience symptoms of an abdominal aortic aneurysm, your doctor may suggest one or more diagnostic tests.

Testing options include:

  • An angiogram, also known as an arteriogram. The test is an X-ray of major blood vessels.
  • A computed tomography scan (CT or CAT scan). CT scans are similar to X-rays, but they are more detailed. Through computer technology, the CT scan provides cross-sectional views of areas of the body.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Detailed images of the body are produced using radio frequencies, magnets and computer technology.
  • Ultrasound. Images of blood vessels are produced using high-frequency sound waves.
