Keep in mind that heart disease affects the family, as well as your loved one. Accept any feelings of fear, anger and loss as a normal part of recovery. Take time for yourself and accept support from friends and one another. Your needs are vital, too.
Don't forget the basics. Eat right, get enough sleep, exercise and take time to relax. The better you feel, the better you can make needed changes. Ask the team members about services the hospital offers such as massage, guided imagery, yoga and Pastoral care to help you and your loved one.
Accept that it is normal to be afraid that your loved one may die or that a heart problem may happen again. As you see your loved one regain his/her strength and return to daily routines, your fears will lessen. If they do not, talk to your doctor.
Do not over-protect your loved one. Provide assistance only when needed. If you are unsure, call and speak with the healthcare provider or rehab staff.
Support your loved one's need to adopt a healthy lifestyle. For example, join an exercise program with your loved one.
