Finding out you have heart disease may place many new demands on you, your spouse, and your family. You and members of your family may have the same feelings or very different ones, such as:

  • Shock, disbelief, anger and frustration

  • Sadness and loss

  • Fear of more health problems or the event happening again

  • Worries about the future and whether you will be able to return to your usual activities

  • Concerns about why this illness happened and what can be done to prevent future problems

  • Loss of control over your life and health

  • Sense of being alone

These feelings may be very strong at first but are a normal part of healing. As you learn more about your illness and return to your usual routine, you should begin to feel better. Many of the changes last for a few weeks or months. With time, you will regain your self-confidence. Family members, also need time to heal.
