Herbal Myths and Facts

**Remember, Natural Doesn't Always Mean Safe**

Myth Herbal products always contain what's on the label
Fact Herbal products are not governed by the FDA. Because the products are not controlled, they may contain more or less of the active ingredient than the label says. Studies have shown that the active ingredients may even be missing or that contaminants may be present.

Myth If the label says it works, there is research to support it
Fact Herbal supplements can be sold without proof that they work or are safe.

Myth You don't need to tell your doctor about the herbs you take
Fact Because herbal products can cause allergic reactions and other health problems it is vital that you tell your doctor if you are taking any herbal products.

Myth It doesn't matter how you take herbs
Fact Just like with any drug you should take herbal products according to labeled directions. The products may not work if you don't take enough but taking too much could cause side effects... More is not better

Myth Herbs are safe for children and pregnant women
Fact Never give an herbal product to a child without first checking with your doctor. Always check with your doctor or midwife before taking any drug or herbal product if you are pregnant or nursing.

Myth Herbs are natural, so they are safe to use with my other drugs
Fact Drug interactions exist between herbal products and commonly used drugs, including Prozac¨ and warfarin (Coumadin¨). Always check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking an herbal product.... Natural doesn't always mean safe
